Family photo sessions can be a wonderful way to capture your family’s unique personality and the moments that matter most. But let’s be honest – prepping for a photoshoot can sometimes feel a bit daunting. Trust me, I’ve been in your shoes many times. But never fear; I’m here to help you make the experience fun and stress-free! Here’s how to approach your family photo session in three stages: before, during and after the shoot.
Before the Shoot: Setting the Stage for Fun
Keep It Low-Key
On the day of your session, avoid planning any big outings or activities that could tire out little ones. We all know how tough witching hour can be! Instead, consider scheduling your session around their nap times or early in the morning when they’re usually at their brightest. However, if you’re interested in a sunset session, that can also work! Just be mindful of your kids’ energy levels leading up to that time. With a little planning, we can capture the beautiful golden hour without leaving everyone cranky. Having a relaxed morning or easy-going afternoon will set a positive tone for the day.
Get Everyone Excited
Involve your partner and kids in the planning! Talk about what activities you might do during the session and share your excitement. Getting everyone on board helps create a positive vibe leading up to the day.
Know What to Expect
Familiarise yourself with the session process. Knowing what to expect can help ease any nerves. I always recommend reading through the client guide and filling out the questionnaire. This way, I can connect with your family, especially the kids, and create a comfortable atmosphere.
Outfit Choices
Choosing outfits can feel stressful, but it doesn’t have to be! Talk to your kids about their outfits in advance, and if they’re desperate to wear a costume, pack it in the bag for later in the shoot so you both get what you want. This little trick can help ease any dressing hurdles.
Hydrate and Snack
Make sure everyone is well-hydrated and has had a proper meal before the shoot so that bellies are full and everyone is energised. This way, you won’t need to provide snacks during the session, which can become a distraction – once you start with snacks, that’s all they’ll want! A healthy snack right beforehand can help keep energy levels up and moods positive without resorting to bribery during the session.
Choose Familiar Activities
Think of activities your family enjoys doing together. Whether it’s playing a game, baking, or exploring a favourite park, incorporating these into the session can make for wonderful moments. Familiar activities will feel natural for the kids, making it easier for everyone to relax.
Toys and Personal Items
If your kids have toys or items they love, feel free to bring them along! These personal touches tell more of your family’s story and can help your kids feel more comfortable.
During the Shoot: Enjoying the Moment
Let the Photographer Take the Lead
During the session, it’s helpful to let me take the lead. Too many voices and instructions at once can be overwhelming, especially for kids. If a moment is happening naturally, go with it! I want to capture those genuine interactions, and I’ll prompt when needed to keep the flow. Focus on enjoying your time together while I guide the session to create beautiful memories.
Embrace Candid Moments
Don’t worry about getting your kids to look directly at the camera. Instead, enjoy the interactions and let their personalities shine through. While I’ll always try to get one shot of everyone looking at the camera, the majority of the moments will be focused on your family engaging with one another. Remember, I’m here to capture the magic of everyday life!
Play and Be Present
Leave the phone in the car and immerse yourself in the moment. Love on your kids and partner – cuddle, laugh and be silly! The closer you are, the more authentic the connections we can capture.
Be Flexible
It’s perfectly okay if things don’t go according to plan. As a parent and a teacher, I understand that kids can have their moments. Allow for breaks if needed, and don’t stress if the kids get grumpy for a minute – I’m here to support you and adapt to the moment. Embracing the unexpected is all part of the fun!
Breathe and Enjoy
It’s all about having fun! I’ll be there to prompt interaction and capture what unfolds naturally, so just breathe and enjoy the experience. Embrace the chaos and remember, this is a reflection of your life right now.
After the Shoot: Keeping the Joy Alive
Celebrate Together
After the session, continue the fun! Plan a family activity, whether it’s a nice dinner, playing a game, or enjoying some time together. This way, the photo session feels like just another great day with your family rather than a major event.
Share the Love
Celebrate your kids’ great behaviour after the session. Tell them how proud you are and share in the excitement of the experience.
Enjoy the Gallery Together
Take some time as a family to look through the online gallery together once it’s ready. Choose a favourite photo or a few to display in your home, making the memories tangible.
Reflect on the Day
After the session, take some time to talk about the experience with your family. Ask them what they enjoyed most, and encourage open feedback. You can share your thoughts directly with me or even write a review as a family! This feedback helps me continue creating fun experiences for other families in the future.
With a little preparation and a positive mindset, your family photo session can be a joyful and memorable experience. Remember, it’s all about capturing the real you – your love, laughter, and those everyday moments that make your family unique.
